What is Natural Capital?
Natural capital refers to the assets provided by nature with the capacity to generate goods and services which benefit business and society. With climate change, burgeoning populations, coronavirus and an uncertain political and economic outlook, the good management and use of our natural capital assets is critical for the prosperity of generations to come.

Cumulus Consultants’ knowledge and expertise of the land-based sector adds value to applying a natural capital approach into both policy and practice. With our experienced team of specialist consultants, we are at the forefront of channelling a natural capital approach into innovative strategy and operational solutions for landowners, investors and policy makers.
Cumulus undertakes the identification, quantification and valuation of natural capital and ecosystem services. We integrate natural capital and ecosystem services into strategy and decision making, and produce accounts to measure progress. Cumulus also develops initiatives to enhance the condition of natural capital and/or ecosystem services, via Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) schemes for example.
Natural Capital Coalition
Cumulus is a member of the Natural Capital Coalition – now the Capitals Coalition – an international collaboration that unites the global natural capital community. Together, we are creating a world that conserves and enhances natural capital.
We are also delighted to be sharing knowledge and learning in this area through the ‘Embedding Natural Capital’ labs run by the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership. These are attended by professionals from sectors as diverse as food, fashion and chemicals drawing on supply chains from around the world.
Case Study
Barnston Estate
Cumulus produced a natural capital assessment and strategy for Barnston Estate, a private estate consisting of 1,800 acres in Cheshire. The assessment enabled the Estate to fully understand its natural capital assets, risks and opportunities to help the owners fulfil their vision for environmental, social and financial sustainability.
