We are really pleased to have undertaken this important research for The Wildlife Trusts. The pig and poultry industries in the UK have a huge footprint on the farmed landscape, with over a third of our wheat grown to feed animals; these sectors also make a significant contribution to our nation’s food security and nutrition. Balancing these critically important outputs with the protection of our countryside is a challenge for industry and regulators alike.
Our report identified the pig and poultry hot-spots across the UK and assessed the risks that such density can pose for soil quality, water quality and biodiversity. We hope that our research will be a catalyst for environmental improvements within the pig and poultry sectors.
