Developing a natural capital assessment template for Scottish land-based businesses

The aim of this project was to develop a robust and practicable NCA template which can be used by land managers to help assess the natural capital assets of their business and guide management decisions necessary to retain and/or enhance these assets.  The NCA template development falls within the scope of NatureScot’s Natural Capital Pilot Programme which responds to the urgent need for transformative land use change in order to reduce carbon emissions by 75% by 2030 and reach net zero by 2045, as well as to address the state of nature and biodiversity losses in Scotland. The NCA template could have a positive impact in terms of enhancing Scotland’s natural capital and helping farms, crofts and estates to become more sustainable and resilient. This project comprised Phase 1, the initial development of the NCA template, with further developing and piloting expected to form part of Phase 2.
