Economics and financial aspects of Illex squid jigging fishery

The Falkland Islands Government (FIG) and Illex Operators Group (IOG) commissioned Tautenay Ltd to undertake a review and analysis of the economics and financial aspects of the Falkland Islands Illex squid jigging fishery. The project involved a cost benefit analysis and a review of prices for Illex in main markets including Taiwan and South Korea whose squid jigging vessels operate in Falkland Island waters. Cumulus worked with Tautenay, visiting the Falkland Islands for meetings with FIG and FI-based businesses, and then Korea and Taiwan for direct engagement with vessel owners and licence holders. Data for 96 vessels was collected and used to inform the cost-benefit analysis, which we reviewed. The report will inform options for improving the viability and sustainability of the fishery, including future licencing arrangements.
