The aim of this project was to report on the environmental risks from food produced in intensive pig and poultry units. Stage 1 of the project comprised a scoping report which identified and assessed the key potential environmental impacts and issues of concern; identified what datasets exist and are available/accessible to inform the work; and consulted with a select group of relevant parties to identify key issues/areas of focus. Stage 2 of the project comprised a quantified environmental risk report, building on the findings and recommendations of the scoping report. The focus of Stage 2 was the risks and potential impacts on water quality, soil quality and biodiversity from pig and poultry production in the UK. The broader range of environment risks and potential environmental impacts from pig and poultry production, and the risks/impacts outside the UK, were acknowledged and noted. The final report provides a robust, evidence-based overview of the environmental risks of pig and poultry production in the UK from available data.
