Farm payments, targets and governance to support integration of trees and woods into farming systems in Wales

The aim of the project was to make recommendations about delivery of increased tree cover on farms through the Sustainable Farming Scheme. We focussed on adapting our 2022 UK model – “Trees and Woodland in the Farmed Landscape” – produced for the Soil Association to the current Welsh context. This included relevant tree and hedge planting options, key farm types, updated income, costs and farm economics, and Welsh Government targets. We produced a robust, high-level model that can be used to consider scenarios, assess impacts and gather insights, for future policy and advocacy by Soil Association Cymru and Coed Cadw / Woodland Trust Wales.
